ST MARGARET’S ANFIELD CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL

Hello and Welcome to Early Years and Reception

· Our time in Nursery will be spent encouraging your child to become active and independent learners providing them with exciting, challenging and stimulating experiences. We will work hard on developing friendships and language skills through carefully planned play-based activities inside and outside of the classroom. Our curriculum covers all areas of the EYFS framework and is based around books to foster a love of reading and to develop interests in a range of topics. We also follow your child’s interests and implement them throughout our planning.

· In Early Years, we support the children’s holistic development and set firm foundations for future learning through a supportive and enriching environment. In Reception, we encourage our children to be happy, independent, resilient individuals who are enthusiastic and have a love of learning. Through fun, play-based experiences, which are both adult led and child-initiated, the children develop knowledge and skills needed for now and in the future. We support the children to become confident communicators and build good relationships with others. We value what each child can do and build upon this with inclusive planning to ensure the best possible start for our children.

This half term, our PE lessons are:

Nursery on a WEDNESDAY.

Reception on a FRIDAY.

Please come to school wearing your full PE kit on this day.

Reading

Please encourage your child to read every night for around 5-10 minutes. Reading with your child will help them to develop a confidence and life-long love of reading as well as going a long way to removing this as a potential barrier to their learning.

We use Oxford Owl and Oxford Reading Buddy as our online reading platforms. (links to apps here??)

Useful Information:-

At St. Margaret’s Anfield we follow the EYFS Framework, which explains how and what your child will be learning. We also use Development Matters which is a non-statutory curriculum guidance. It is very flexible so it can be adapted to the children’s needs and interests. Throughout the Early Years Foundation stage your child will learn new knowledge and skills through 7 areas of learning.

The three Prime Areas are:

  • Communication and Language;
  • Physical Development;
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

These Prime Areas form a strong foundation for your child’s future learning.

As the children become more confident in the Prime areas we will focus upon these Specific Areas of learning further developing your child’s knowledge, skills and understanding.

These are:

  • Literacy;
  • Mathematics;
  • Understanding the World;
  • Expressive Arts and Design.

These 7 areas are used to plan your child’s learning, suited to your child’s unique needs. Each of the areas of learning will be implemented through planned and purposeful play.

All areas of learning and development are important and interconnected. These areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity for learning, form relationships and thrive.

The resources and enhancements provided in different areas of the indoor and outside classroom will support the needs and interests of your child and encourage play based learning as well as the development of key characteristics of effective learning.

These 3 characteristics of effective teaching and learning are:

  • playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’
  • active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements
  • creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things
